Courses

The TC has 2 course options 100 K or 60 K

On May 6th, 2017 the air will still be crisp in the early morning Mojave Desert. On this inaugural event, racers mingle, preparing for an exciting day of racing side-by side with the Legend Tinker Juarez on a course envisioned and an event that celebrates a lifetime of cycling achievement.

This uniquely designed race begins in historic downtown Beatty, Nevada,  the gateway to Death Valley National Park and the Oasis Valley. The race finishes at the Spicer Ranch, the Oasis Valley hub for mountain biking.

All racers will do the Flourspar/Silica Mine loop. This loop will immediately separate the field with a 1400 ft climb in the first 6 miles ( who said deserts are flat). A short saddle in the mountain will provide relief and a chance to grab hydration and a snack at the first feed zone (mile 9) before taking on the steepest climb of the day to an elevation of 4600 ft. There is no shame in walking here. Once you crest – grab your brakes; you are in for a heck of a narly downhill. Coming down the old Silica Mine road you will encounter approximately 2 miles of chunky rocks and switchbacks while descending 630 ft into Beatty Wash.

GRO Races is please to partner with Trailforks.com. With Trailforks you will be able to research details of the course for pre-riding and planning nutrition.

Below is also a description of each course  with elevation and hydration and feed zones marked.

At mile 14 the Race course meets up with the Canteen Trail and hopefully friends will be waiting and cheering you on. If you have had enough this is also an optional bail out back to the Ranch. The course from this point becomes a relatively fast decent on a two-track back to Hwy 95, then left on the pavement back to Beatty and Check Point 1 and another feed zone.

AT Mile 22 the course will enter the historic Tonapah-Tidewater Narrow Gage railroad grade. Both distances will take the first 5 miles of this together to the next feed zone at Rhyolite. This is a great place for friends to spectate the race and the last chance to get support for some distance. At this point the 100 K racers and 60 K racers split on two different routes back to Spicer Ranch.

-60 K Course option

At Mile 26 racers will turn north onto Indian Springs road. From here it is approximately 11 miles to the finish. The terrain will be varied, with rough loose sections of road and several steep and challenging climbs. You will travel through the hills with remnants of the areas rich mining history. You will also pass several fresh water springs – the reason this is the Oasis valley.  The course finishes with a fast 4 mile downhill to Spicer Ranch. You will have to cross Hwy 95, so wait for the course marshal to give you the all clear before crossing the highway.

-100K Course option

At mile 26 racers will continue thru the Ghost Town of Rhyolite and connect back with the Rail Road grade into Death Valley National Park.  The next 11 miles though the park will be a real treat. The quiet desert and abundant wildlife will surround you as you pedal fast and steady on the old railroad bed. At mile 37 you will hit the Drop Bag center and course marshal at Stozzi Ranch Road. The course turns right here and heads almost dead pan straight on a rolling downhill for 9 miles where you will meet up with another course marshal and hydration station before turning into the Bullfrog Hills. You will weave and climb through the hills for about 5 miles before taking the final 5 mile descent to the finish at the Spicer Ranch. You will have to cross Hwy 95, so wait for the course marshal to give you the all clear before crossing the highway.
